Malala Yousafzai (UN Messenger of Peace) on “Financing the Future: Education 2030”

Good afternoon and assalamu alaikum Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to speak here When I last attended the UN General Assembly two years ago you were launching the sustainable development goals I hoped they signaled a new ambition for twelve years of free safe and quality education for all girls It has been two years, and I’m here to ask you today What have you done so far? In the last two years not one a country has significantly increased their aid towards education Most a flatlined or decreased In the last two years None of the nine biggest countries in the Global South have the recommended spending targets on education several have made dramatic cuts to their education budgets I cannot say that I’m proud of the progress that we have seen in the last two years We have big goals, but here is the truth: none of the SDGs, not a single one can be accomplished if we Unless we educate our girls If you want to grow economies Improve the air we breathe Promote peace and advance public health, we must invest in girls 130 million girls are out of school today They are pushing back against poverty, war and child marriage to go to school The SDGs were a promise that we could fight with these girls So far we are failing We are failing them, but we are also failing ourselves when girls cannot go to school they lose the opportunity to pursue their dreams and our world loses their potential This summer I traveled to the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America to meet girls struggling to get an education I have invited two of them here today to tell you in their own words Why we must keep why you must keep your promise and invest in girls. Thank you so much
