My First Job: Secretary of Education Arne Duncan

♪♪ (music playing) ♪♪ Secretary Arne Duncan:
My first summer job was
actually when I was pretty young, I think around six or
seven years old and working in my mother’s after
school program. My job at the end of each day
was to wash the books and to make sure the books were cleaned
for the next day and to clean the tables, to make sure that
the tables were spotless so when students were arriving
the following day, they would have a great
environment in which to learn. I don’t think I got rich. I think I was making about a
quarter a week if I was lucky. But I learned early the
importance of having a great work ethic. I learned how important it
was to make sure young people, particularly in very
tough communities, had a really special place to
come and learn and apply their skills and gain new knowledge. And I learned the importance
of having a good work ethic and what, as a young child, you
could do to be successful and to help contribute to
other’s well being. ♪♪ (music playing) ♪♪
