The University of Kansas School of Health Professions

The School of Health Professions at the University of Kansas Medical Center is one of the most
promising schools of health professions in the country today. We have five of the programs
in the school ranked amongst the best in the country. This is because we have fantastic
faculty who are highly dedicated and motivated to the work they do. The staff are incredible
and the most supportive set of staff that I have met, and our students are the luckiest
because they get a full blend of the best faculty and the best supportive staff. We
graduate some of the best clinicians out there today. The School of Health Professions at
KU is one unique school that has the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science,
the Department of Occupational Therapy Education, the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition,
the Department of Nurse Anesthesia, the Department of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology,
the Department of Respiratory Care, the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences and the Department
of Health Information Management. That’s a lot of programs in one school. And that is
the beauty of our school because we train an extensive array of health care providers.
More importantly, the level of interaction between the students and the faculty – that
better prepares the students to take on leadership roles as they go on into clinical services.
When they graduate and start to work, they stand out so early that they are offered leadership
positions very early in their careers. Research is at the crux of what we do in health professions,
and as such, all of the programs in the school of health professions emphasize the need for
evidence-based practice. There is no evidence-based practice without the research. Most of our
faculty are heavily engaged in ground-breaking research. Our faculty not only teach research
based on what others have done, they teach research from the standpoint of what they
have done and what they have experienced. The good part of it is that our students then
have the opportunity to work in these labs and have a first-time experience of what the
faculty are trying to teach. This is not something you find in all schools of health professions.
I would recommend the KU School of Health Professions to anyone, any day, any time.
